ICLEI hosted the 4th webinar session of the City Interest Group (CIG) on Food Waste Prevention on March the 27th. The session dived into food redistribution, the role of food banks, and the concept of social security for food.

CIG members shared their experiences with redistribution and food banks to prevent food waste. Lilli Renner from the European Food Banks Federation gave a comprehensive overview of the European food donation landscape, including very relevant examples of national regulations. Our partner from CORIZO porject, Balázs Cseh, from the Hungarian Food Bank Association talked about the operation of food banks on the ground, with many interesting reflections on success factors and recommendations. Xavier Juanena offered a very valuable testimonial on their extensive work they are doing in Vallès Occidental with initiatives such as Recooperem. Finally, we had the occasion to reflect on the right to food, and learn from pioneers on social security for food thanks to Guilhem Genty from CIVAM. Thanks to all of you!

The CIG explores the various settings in which food waste is generated and discusses effective multi-stakeholder approaches tailored to those. In that regard, city representatives share their experiences, learn from CHORIZO case studies, and project insights can be extrapolated to their local realities and reflected upon.

  • The CIG will meet three times per year until October 2025.
