On Wednesday 20th November, we had the opportunity to learn from the first-hand experiences of Antwerp and Milan in setting up hubs to tackle food waste during the 6th City Interest Group webinar, hosted by ICLEI in the framework of the CHORIZO project.
Antwerp developed a climate strategy in 2022, identifying opportunities from planners and aligning with a call from the Minister of Welfare to transition social platforms into circular food hubs. The focus remains on integrating social and circular dimensions, transforming the distribution system into a sustainable and socially inclusive food hub.

A third of food produced globally is wasted, meanwhile, hundreds of millions suffer from food insecurity. The City of Milan’s Food Waste Hubs tackle both problems.
Addressing the paradox of food poverty in an era of abundant food production is a significant issue that requires multi-faceted solutions. Public and private sources enabled the creation of food hubs, which coordinate city-wide food recovery efforts.
During the CIG, we also explored the Guidance and Capacity Building Programme for food waste prevention in cities, currently being developed as part of the CHORIZO project.
- The Guidance Document on how to use social norm insights to reduce food loss in cities will be published in January 2025.
- Capacity Building Programme: The programme, designed to integrate behavioural change into food waste prevention in cities, will run from February to May 2025 and is targeted at local authorities.
Cities participating in the webinar contributed with their insights into shaping both the Guidance Document and the Capacity Building Programme.
